The Washington Chamber of Commerce invited residents to see Washington through fresh eyes with a first impressions community forum.
Over the past several months, a team of trained assessors from across the state visited Washington as first-time visitors to evaluate the community’s strengths and opportunities. The visitors did so anonymously to get an authentic experience when a visitor comes to Washington.
The forum, held Monday night at the Washington Public Library, revealed the findings of the secret shoppers, diners, and visitors and shared ideas to help strengthen tourism, attract new residents, and enhance local quality of life.
Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Michelle Redlinger shared her thoughts on the opportunity, “The Chamber was excited about applying for the opportunity. It was something that I wanted to get an evaluation on what does Washington look like if you are a first time visitor. This first impression program is a partnership with Iowa State Extension Office, and Travel Iowa, and it’s the second year that they are offering it. We were fortunate to get selected.”
One area that was outlined as needing improvement was to increase marketing and promotion of Washington. A positive take away was special events and festivals, such as the Farmers Market and Thursday Night Live.
The program was hosted by the Washington Chamber of Commerce, Washington’s Tourism Advisory Committee, Hotel/Motel Tax Fund Administration Committee, and Washington’s First Impressions Committee.
