The WACO Warriors continued their dominance in conference basketball by sweeping a doubleheader with the Lone Tree Lions Tuesday night. The WACO boys, ranked fourth in Class 1A, more than doubled up Lone Tree in the opening quarter to lead 25-12, and a 20-8 run to close the first half widened the lead for good in a 66-28 victory.

Junior guard Hunter Hughes led the Warriors with 15 points, five assists and three steals. Senior forward Cody Graber put 11 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots to push WACO to 18-0. The Lions drop to 3-11 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North and 6-13 overall.

The WACO girls led 15-9 at the end of the first quarter, and Lone Tree would keep the deficit at just six points at halftime. The Warriors couldn’t pull away until the fourth quarter, but they did eventually create a comfortable lead and ended the Lions’ five-game winning streak with a 60-45 win.

Seniors Ellah Kissell and Grace Coble led WACO with 19 points each, while junior Emma Wagler scored 12 to get the Warriors to 13-2 in conference play and 16-3 overall. Despite Lone Tree’s winning streak coming to a close, the Lions are still 10-5 in league action and 12-7 overall. Both programs wrap up play in the Super Conference North this season with doubleheaders this evening, as WACO visits Louisa-Muscatine and Lone Tree hosts Wapello.
