The second season starts tonight for the Washington softball team when they open class 4A regional play with a quarterfinal bout against Grinnell.

The Demons finished the regular season 8-17 after dropping a pair to Solon on Monday by 20-7 and 14-9 final scores. A silver lining in game one was a pair of solo home runs off the bat of RyLee Fishback and the Demons put up a seven spot in the fifth inning of the nightcap that briefly gave them a lead. Kaitlyn Mitchell leads the squad with a .403 batting average and Emmy Wenger has a 5.03 ERA in 40 innings of work.

The Tigers are 10-10 and they placed sixth out of eight teams in the Little Hawkeye Conference. Grinnell closed the regular season on Friday with a 12-2 victory over Newton. Kaitlyn Kriegel is a player to look out for with a .397 batting average and Ella Grife has a 2.56 ERA in 57 innings in the circle.

Washington Head Coach Ben Obermann previews the night ahead. “They are a solid team. They have been pitcher by committee so we could see two or three pitchers. We need to have good approaches at the plate like we have been lately and get out to a fast start. Grinnell has good athletes so we have to avoid beating ourselves and if we do that, we will have a great chance to win.”

This marks the first meeting between these two teams in 13 years. The playoff action begins at 7 p.m. tonight in Washington. Listen to the contest on FM 106.1 KCII starting at 6:30 p.m.
