The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls basketball teams rolled through Anamosa at home on Thursday. The Golden Hawk girls celebrated senior night in Wellman with a big 71-35 victory. The Hawks sprinted out of the gate, going on a 20-5 run that lasted the entire first quarter. Mid-Prairie led 34-17 at the half. Mid-Prairie continued to extend their lead outscoring Anamosa 38-18 in the second half to secure the win. The Hawks knocked down 10 threes on the night, seven in the first half and 11 players scored, led by Myah Lugar with a game high 23. After the contest, head coach Danny Hershberger talked about the win. “We knew they were going to be aggressive with their press and defense. We thought we could break that and get some easy baskets. We were able to do that, move the ball on offense, take good shots and knock them down. We talked at half about having a lead and letting teams back in the game recently, so we challenged the girls to dig in on defense and extend the lead. Myah Lugar had a great night. She trusted herself. That’s what she is capable of. She is a sharpshooter.”

Mid-Prairie honored five seniors on the night Caitlyn Riggan, Georgia Nisly, Lanie Bowlin, Abby Frantz and Jaselyn Robertson. The Hawks are now 7-12 on the year.

The Golden Hawk boys pulled away in the second half for a 76-54 win. Anamosa led 18-16 after a fast paced first quarter. The Hawks took a 34-30 lead into the half. In the third quarter Brad Tornow and Aidan Rath asserted themselves offensively, scoring 14 combined in the frame as the Hawks watched their lead grow to 57-44 going to the fourth. In the final quarter the Golden Hawk defense held Anamosa scoreless for six minutes while they built a lead of 25 and put the game away. After the game, Mid-Prairie head coach Daren Lambert talked about the team win. “Our guys are pretty excited, that’s a good win, now two in a row. Tornow has the ability to score. By his numbers he doesn’t average a whole lot, normally he is dishing the ball to others but tonight he had confidence. We got some shots up in practice this week. Rath is starting to figure out how good he can be. His physicality was great, positioning was good, pulled down 12 rebounds and finished with a double double. We are going to lean on him in the inside the rest of the season.”

Tornow led Mid-Prairie with 17 points, Aidan Rath had 16, Carter Harmsen 12, and Ethan Trimpe 10. The Hawks had 11 total players score in the win. Mid-Prairie is now 5-13 on the year. The Golden Hawk boys and girls travel to West Branch Friday.
