Technology updates are on the docket for the Washington Police Department. Police Chief Jim Lester wants to streamline the equipment so that it is all from the same provider. Tablets will be put in the patrol units to replace the current patrol unit computers that have an operating system that will no longer be supported come January. The department will also replace its server, which has memory storage issues and will no longer have Microsoft support starting in 2020. Councilperson Elaine Moore applauded the upgrades, “I think this is just amazing. I think that the information that we have here and the fact that we’re going to stay on top of our technology from this point on – excellent work.” It will cost about $20,000 for the server, tablets, and mounting equipment in the patrol vehicles. The dollars will be spent from the capital equipment fund. The tablets will be leased with an on-going payment and will be replaced every three years. The city council approved the upgrades unanimously.
