The Highland Huskies’ boys’ basketball team has made improvements the past two seasons. The Huskies, who won a total of 12 games from 2009-2012, won 13 games during the 2013-14 season. Thirteen wins came on the heels of a 14 -win season in 2012-13.

A reason for their recent success was due to the play of last year’s senior class. Three of the four seniors on the 2013-14 squad made the all-conference squad, with Josh Brase leading the way. Brase led the Southeast Iowa Super Conference with 21 points per game.

The Huskies do return a trio of players who played key minutes last season. Sophomore Trent Lasek returns as the team’s lone all-conference performer. Lasek, who was named an all-conference honorable mention, averaged 3.4 points per game while shooting 55% from the field as a freshman. Nick Sandburg comes back for his junior season after averaging 4.5 points and 4.4 rebounds per game as a sophomore. Finally, Jesse Wollrab is back as one of the team’s senior leaders. Wollrab averaged 4.3 points and 1.8 rebounds per game during his junior season.

The Highland Huskie girls’ and boys’ basketball teams are in action tomorrow evening as they travel to Letts Iowa for a conference matchup with the Louisa-Muscatine Falcons. Tip off of the girls’ game is scheduled for 6 p.m. with the boys’ game to follow.
