press play to hear from MPMH Supt. Ron Mullen
The head of the Iowa Department of Human Services is recommending the Mount Pleasant Mental Health Facility be closed and have its services moved to Independence. Ron Mullen is Superintendent at the Mount Pleasant Facility. He says at this time they’re looking at it as a proposal. He says they will continue to function as they always have. More than 100 workers could be affected by the plan. The recommendation is in response to an order by the legislature to review the state’s four mental health institutions because of declines in populations and changing views on how to treat people with mental illness. Cost is also a factor.
