Each year, the Iowa Secretary of the Treasury’s office releases names of Iowa residents who have unclaimed properties available to them.  Treasury Secretary Michael Fitzgerald says the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt is one way of letting Iowans know about assets they may have forgotten about.

Since the program started in 1983, over $150 million in unclaimed property has been returned to more than 377,000 individuals.  Secretary Fitzgerald says the money could come from forgotten savings or checking accounts, utility refunds or deposits, or other assets.

When the money goes unreported for an extended period of time, it gets reported to his office.  He notes this year’s list is still being completed, but an announcement will be made when it is finished.
