The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union boys soccer team used a big second half to put away Highland in the first round of the Class 1A boys district soccer tournament Monday in Columbus Junction. The two teams played to a scoreless stalemate in the first half, but the floodgates opened in the second for the blue and white. Angel Alvarez scored a postseason hat trick to lead the Wildcats and So L. Mon and Dante Orozco-Gutierrez each added a goal. Ryan Villa and Rickenley Ambroise had the assists. Columbus finished with five shots on goal and six corner kicks. Jarrett Brackin led the Huskies in goal with double digit saves. The win moves the Wildcats to 7-5-3 this year and into the second round of the 1A tournament for a match with Tipton Wednesday. Highland ends their season at 1-13. The Huskies lose a pair of seniors in Alan Nass and Brena Hazelett.
