For this year’s WACO soccer team, their first win will be one to remember. The Warriors defeated Danville 3-1 on Tuesday in a game called by severe weather moving into the area.

WACO controlled the ball for a majority of the first half, with chances coming fast and frequently. Six minutes into the half, the Warriors put themselves on the board. Freshman Deric Tousignant received a long ball from goalie Holden Hughes, and then fought through both the Danville defenders and goalie to put one into the net. The Bears had a few opportunities to equalize past that point, mostly looking to win the footrace on through balls, but Hughes picked up several saves to keep Danville off the board. WACO extended their lead to two five minutes before halftime, with Tristan Luitjens blasting one into the lower right corner to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead. That’s where things would be heading into halftime.

Both the Warriors and Bears were able to score a goal in the 28 minutes of the second half, with forward Niles Reichenbach converting on an opportunity for the Warriors. However, with severe weather quickly moving into the Wayland area, the game was suspended with 12 minutes to play.

High winds blew debris onto Roth Field and knocked over the press box. Both teams were able to find shelter and received no injuries. The game has been recorded as a 3-1 win for WACO. The Warriors improved to 1-2 with the win, while Danville fell to 1-3-1.

Due to efforts from both WACO students and staff and the Wayland community, Roth Field was cleared enough to allow the Warriors to host their previously-cancelled Thursday tilt against Central Lee.
