Another night of Superconference basketball awaits as the Highland Huskies and WACO Warriors will do battle tonight at Highland High School.

The girls contest will start things off. Highland is off to a 7-1 start, winning their last seven in a row after dropping their season opener to Keota. The Huskies have not been held under 50 points this season. Sophomore Kamryn Fink is averaging a double-double this season, not only leading the team in scoring with 16.8 points a game, but also leading the team in rebounding at 11.9 boards a game. Juniors Hailey Brun and Katelyn Thomann are also averaging above 10 points a game this season. Highland defeated Wapello on Tuesday, 53-38.

The WACO girls are fresh off their first win of the season Tuesday, a resounding 45-19 win over Hillcrest Academy. WACO’s four losses have all come close, with three of them being by 6 points or less. Brenna Graber and Drew Graber each scored 11 points in the win. For the season, Brenna Graber is the team’s leading scorer with 12.8 points a game.

Highland leads the series 15-10 since 2008. Last year, the season series was split, with WACO taking the first game 64-59 and the Huskies taking the second game 64-53.

After the girls, the boys will take to the floor. Highland’s boys are 1-5 and 1-3 in the conference. The Huskies earned their first win this season on Tuesday, knocking off Wapello 45-42. Junior Landon Roling has been one of the most prolific scorers in the Superconference this season, averaging 18.2 points a game in his first six contests. Roling is also pulling down 7.8 rebounds a game.

WACO is 3-2, and 3-1 in the conference. WACO lost a hotly-contested matchup with Hillcrest Tuesday, 55-44. The Warriors will look to bounce back, with leading scorers Holden Hughes and Hayden Shelman held largely at bay against the Ravens. WACO holds wins over Pekin, Louisa-Muscatine, and Lone Tree this season.

WACO leads the series 14-9 since 2006, and has not lost to Highland since 2016. The Warriors and the Huskies did not play from 2017 to 2021.

Tonight’s doubleheader is also the second annual Christmas at the Dog Pound Toy Drive. Fans can get free admittance with the donation of a new, unwrapped toy. You can listen to the games tonight on FM106.1, the KCII1 app, and kciiradio.com.
