
The Winfield-Mount Union boys and girls basketball teams step into the Area Game of the Week spotlight for the first time this year when they host the Lone Tree Lions tonight on the KCII3 Stream.
The WMU girls are 1-2 overall, 0-2 in the Superconference North after back-to-back losses to Pekin and Louisa-Muscatine. On Tuesday against the Falcons it was Lilly Heckethorn leading the squad with 17 points, followed by Madisen Kellogg’s double-double of 14 points and 13 boards. This season, the Lady Wolves score 44 points per game and give up 43, shooting 34% from the field, 18% from deep and 44% at the line, with 38 rebounds, 11 assists, 14 steals, three blocks, and 30 turnovers a night. Kellogg leads the Superconference North individually with 23 points per game on 46% shooting from the floor.
Lone Tree picked up their first conference win of the season Tuesday on the road at Columbus. The Lady Lions won the contest despite making just one of fifteen three point attempts. Finley Jacque led the way with 23 points. This year, Lone Tree scores 47 points per game and gives up 45, shooting 31% from the floor, 20% from three and 52% at the line, with 34 rebounds, seven assists, 11 steals, three blocks, and 19 turnovers per game. Jacque paces the team with 17 points, third most in the SEISC-North, and three steals a night.
The Lady Wolves lead the all-time series with Lone Tree in the Varsity Bound era 18-17 dating back to 2006, with the Lady Lions having taken five straight.
The WMU boys were a dominant 78-40 winner on opening night Tuesday against L&M. Two Wolves had blockbuster nights, including Isaac Egli’s 26 points and four steals, and Cody Milks’ 25 points and nine swipes. The team shot 48% from the field, 23% from downtown and 63% from the line, with 35 rebounds, 15 assists, 24 steals, three blocks, and 11 turnovers. The win was the 13th straight victory in the series for WMU.
Lone Tree was not as fortunate in their season lid lifter Tuesday, falling to Columbus 64-55. Individually, three Lions scored in double figures, including Domonic Garcia’s 15, and John Daufeldt and Reece Holbrook’s 11 each. The loss was the second consecutive to the ‘Cats for Lone Tree. Last season, the Lions averaged 55 points per game and gave up 62, shooting 41% from the field, 29% from three and 58% at the line with 26 rebounds, 13 assists, 10 steals, and 15 turnovers per game.
In the Varsity Bound era, the Lions lead the all-time series with the Wolves 21-14 dating back to 2009. WMU is seeking their 11th straight in the series tonight.
