The annual Washington County boys and girls dual wrestling championships were held Tuesday at Tim Grady Gymnasium in Wellman. On the boys side, the Highland Huskies left Mid-Prairie with the traveling trophy. The Huskies beat Washington 47-35, WACO 48-36 and the home Golden Hawks 65-18. Head coach Nick Cole joined the KCII PM Sports Page this week to talk about his team’s night. “We have 17 guys that are fully bought in and doing everything that’s asked. This was one night. It’s not the State Championships. We wanted that trophy last year. We set that as a goal again this year. These kids are capable of winning and winning at a high level. The kids are happy, they got a trophy. I hope they’re proud of it. I want them to stay humble. We won’t forget that we have that because that trophy will sit in our room for the next 12 months and be a reminder for us.”

Huskies with perfect nights included Landon Sweeting with a pin, Cash Cole with a pin and 16-0 tech fall, Brock Nebergall and Tyler Pierson with a pair of pins each, Brock Thomann with a fall, including his 100th career win, and Caleb Wheeler with a pair of pins.

Washington went 2-1 on the night with wins over WACO 48-29 and Mid-Prairie 60-18. A Demon trio put together perfect nights including Caden Greiner with two pins and a tech fall, and Blaine Rees and Rudy Wolfe with two falls each.

WACO got their win over Mid-Prairie 38-30. Warriors with perfect nights included Ian Maize with two falls and Harley Larrimore with a pin and 21-5 tech fall.

Despite going winless in team competition the Golden Hawks had several individual bright spots including perfect nights with two pins each for Josh Turner and Tommy Miller.

In girls competition, the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks were team champions with a 3-0 night that included a 30-24 win over Highland, 42-18 win over WACO and 36-18 victory over Washington. Golden Hawk head coach Brock Moore spoke with KCII Sports after the meet about the win. “The goal for tonight was to get matches. We had some girls that were moving because JV and varsity to do that. That allowed us to bump and move around tonight. We have a lot of returners and they did what we expected them to do. There were some tough matches, and there were some losses, but in the end it was a good night.”

Austyn Sexton had an unbeaten night that included a contested match fall. Highland was 2-1 on the night with wins over Washington and WACO by matching 36-12 scores. The Huskies had a handful of athletes with perfect nights including Lilliana Ruiz DeChavez, Adley Sweeting, Maiya Singbeil, Hailey McFarland and Chloe Sexton all with one fall each.

WACO’s win came over Washington 25-24 on Criteria E, number of forfeits. While Washington didn’t score any dual wins on the night they had plenty of individual standouts including perfect nights for Brynlee Flynn, Ryha Wellington and Bella Venenga all with a pin each.
