It can be difficult to manage the amount of candy kids get this time of year. Some children collect hundreds of pieces of candy from Halloween parties or trick-or-treating.
According to Delta Dental of Iowa, candies and other sugary sweets can lead to dental issues like cavities or tooth decay, especially when consumed in large quantities. There are ways to keep teeth healthy during Halloween. Avoid certain kinds of candy, like sticky, gummy or hard candies, that can stick to teeth. Remember to brush after eating candy, especially before bed.
As a reminder, Washington County Public Health offers dental services for children, including a fluoride varnish program, and silver diamine fluoride. These programs are offered through I-Smile, a statewide program, working to prevent cavities before they start, helping parents get kids to the dentist, and sharing information with medical and dental providers, teachers, parents and everyone about the importance of oral health for kids to stay healthy.
