A national protest was held Saturday called No Kings Day and the movement had a local footprint.

The “No Kings” theme was created by the 50501 Movement, a national organization made up of Americans who outline their goal as standing for democracy and against what they call the authoritarian actions of the current administration. The name 50501 stands for 50 states, 50 protests, one movement.

Local organizers held their own No Kings Day Event in Washington. Organized by the Indivisible Iowa Washington County group, protestors rallied on the sidewalks at the intersection of Highway 92/Washington Street and South 2nd Avenue near City Hall. Indivisible started as the Indivisible Guide, a Google Doc guide to organizing locally. It caught fire as millions of people picked up the guide and its name – Indivisible – and organized their own local Indivisible groups to put the guide into action. There were over 100 people in attendance at the local gathering with signs that read “No Kings” and “Liberty and Justice for All”.

Nationally, organizers say there were 2,600 registered events on Saturday, covering every state in the union.
