The No. 7 in Class 3A Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk volleyball team made quick work of three opponents Monday, sweeping their way through pool play in the opening round of the River Valley Conference Tournament at West Branch. The Hawks downed Monticello 21-11 and 21-12, No. 13 in Class 3A Wilton 21-14 and 21-18 and Cascade 21-15 and 21-17. Golden Hawk sophomore Tessa Bombei and freshman Elise Foster talked with KCII Sports Monday about the success in the first round. “I think we had a lot of energy and our bench has been more hyped recently and that’s really helped us. I think our block was strong tonight in following the hitters. We did a good job of picking up balls and we stayed together tonight when it got a little shaky. We just kept pushing hard tonight. It feels really good (to win all three tonight). We just have to carry this into Thursday and keep all of that energy!”
Mid-Prairie was led on the night by Avery Helmuth with 35 assists. Jovi Evans had 29 digs, 21 kills, 21 assists, two blocks and two aces. Jeorgia Evans posted 42 digs and three aces. Harper Pacha had 14 kills. Tessa Bombei five blocks and two aces for Elise Foster. The Golden Hawks are now 25-8 on the year entering Thursday’s RVC finals at West Liberty.
