The Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves football team scored a huge victory in Victor Friday over HLV 50-34. WMU led 16-8 after one and 16-14 at half. The Wolves controlled action after break, outscoring the Warriors 34-18. Winfield-Mt. Union head coach Scott McCarty joined the KCII Radio Coaches Corner Saturday to break down the win. “We were able to blow some things open. We really found success in the run game. Nick Sparrow did a really good job for us and Cody (Milks) made some really good decisions. We got their defense uncomfortable and we were able to string some drives together. We challenged the kids when we got the ball back with four minutes to go in the game that the last drive has to end in the end zone or on a knee. Our kids were able to finish out the game because they were able to run the ball. A lot of that credit goes to the guys up front. Grant Anderson, Gabe Cummings, Keaton Starkweather and Colin Anderson, those guys did a really good job. Our defensive line did a really nice job. We pursued really well as a team on defense. I thought we tackled really well. Tayson Samuels was able to make some nice plays one-on-one in the open field. We played as a full group. Colin Anderson had about a 60-yard touchdown, it was exciting to see him get a big play. Max Edwards had a touchdown and he’s putting together a really nice season. It was a full team effort, offense and defense, I’m proud of the way the team competed, and we needed it to keep our playoff chances alive.”
The Wolves outgained HLV 409-297 in total yards including 151-45 on the ground. The Wolves won turnovers 3-1. Individually, Cody Milks was 23 of 41 throwing for 250 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. He also ran for another score with 49 yards. Nicholas Sparrow had 120 all-purpose yards, 94 on the ground and three touchdowns. Max Edwards caught nine balls for 111 yards and a score, Colin Anderson had two touchdown catches. Tayson Samuels led the defense with 10 tackles, Milks had an interception and Edwards and Wyatt Palmer each recovered a fumble. Winfield-Mt. Union is now 2-2 in district, 2-4 overall.
