It was Central Lee’s Homecoming Friday night, but it was the visitors that threw the party, as the No. 4 in Class 2A Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks rolled to a 56-0 road win.
The Golden Hawks dominated both sides of the ball from the opening kick, marching the opening possession 85 yards on 11 plays, the final 16 a Hudson Ehrenfelt touchdown run to go up 7-0. Central Lee’s best drive of the night was their first, a 16 play march that covered 79 yards before Kaden Kos recovered a fumble in the red zone to turn away the Hawks. Mid-Prairie turned that takeaway into a touchdown nine plays later when Ehrenfelt ran for his second score, a 16-yarder to double Mid-Prairie’s lead. After a Central Lee three-and-out, the Golden Hawks hit a big play when Brooks Weber went up top to Kaden Kos on a 47-yard touchdown toss to make it 21-0. After another failed series for Central Lee, Mid-Prairie gave Ehrenfelt two carries, and he covered 34 yards, including a six-yard touchdown run to make it 28-0. Mid-Prairie scored their second takeaway and a defensive touchdown just before half, when Lenox Miller ripped the ball out and sprinted 40 yards for his first varsity touchdown, enacting the running clock and sending Mid-Prairie to break with a 35-0 lead.
Out of halftime, the game trend continued. First play from scrimmage after intermission, Kael Miller smashed quarterback Brett Cook and Josh Turner jumped on his third fumble recovery of the year, setting Mid-Prairie up and the 23. Ehrenfelt scored two plays later from three yards out, his fourth touchdown run to make it 42-0. Two more scores went on the board for the Golden Hawks the rest of the way including a Weber to Carson Humphrey 29 yard touchdown throw, and Ryan Henry’s first varsity touchdown, a five yard scamper. Mid-Prairie head coach Daren Lambert joined the KCII locker room show to talk about the win. “Our offensive line really controlled the line of scrimmage and our receivers did a great job of blocking too. Hudson (Ehrenfelt) was running hard, Ryan (Henry) ran hard. We were attacking, getting to the second level, then using our athleticism to make guys miss. It was a total team effort. (In the passing game) we were making great decisions. Guys got open. Kaden (Kos) got across the safety’s face, (Carson) Humphrey went up and made a great play on his touchdown catch. Our defense has done a great job of taking the ball of out of the opponent’s hands and putting it in ours. We found a way to get an early turnover and really took off from there. Young guys like Ryan Henry and Lenox Miller have really taken advantage of opportunities. Next man in. They have gone out and made plays. It’s a lot of guys stepping in and doing their jobs consistently.”
Unofficially, the Golden Hawks won total yards 374-172 and turnovers 3-0. Individual leaders included Ehrenfelt with 19 touches, 204 yards and two touchdowns. He became Mid-Prairie’s all-time catches leader with a grab in the first half. Weber was eight of 10 throwing for 127 yards and a score each to Humphrey and Kaden Kos. Caedyn Huston finished with a team best nine tackles and Turner, Kaden Kos and Lenox Miller recovered fumbles. Mid-Prairie now 5-1 this year, 3-0 in district play as Central Lee drops to 2-4, winless in District 6. The Golden Hawks are back in Wellman Friday against Mediapolis.
