Operation Midnight Hammer, directed by President Donald Trump, took place on June 21st. This operation sent U.S. B-2 Spirit bombers out of Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, and dropped 14 bombs onto Fordow and a second nuclear facility in Iran. The strikes were intended to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.

U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley shared his perspective of the United States involvement in the conflict, “Iran saying ‘Death to Israel,’ we don’t want anyone to say, “Death to Israel,” because we support Israel. We support Israel because it’s in our national security interests to do it. Having a friend in the Middle East where we can operate and cooperate with, and they can help us with our interests and we can help them with their interests is very important. And the second and final reason, is because they are the only democracy in the Middle East, and we ought to support democracy wherever we can. In regard to Iran, hopefully, we’ve slowed down, I say hopefully, but maybe we’ve ended. But if we haven’t then at least we’ve slowed down their development of the nuclear bomb.”

Following the bombing of the Iranian uranium enrichment site, Iranians attacked American forces at nearby Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. There are varying reports on the effects of the strikes on the three facilities.
