The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union girls soccer team had a big season this spring, and were honored by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association with All-District awards.
Junior Naveiah Garza was named a Class 1A All-Southeast District defender. She was part of a Wildcat defensive unit that pitched three shuts outs during the year, allowing an average of two goals per game. She appeared in 12 matches, starting 11 of them and scored a goal of her own.
Sophomore Iris Garza was named a Class 1A All-Southeast District midfielder. She was second on the team with seven goals scored, adding four assists and two made penalty kicks, starting 11 matches.
Head coach Edgar Aguirre was named Class 1A Southeast District Coach of the Year. He guided the Wildcats through a season where at times, they played matches with only nine available players, yet finished with a 5-7 record and 2-2 standing in the Southeast Iowa Superconference. The Wildcats led the Superconference in assists and made and attempted penalty kicks.
