Two conference champions will square off for a district title on KCII Saturday when the No. 2 South Iowa Cedar League Champion Sigourney Savages (22-3) host the Southeast Iowa Superconference North Division Champion Hillcrest Academy Ravens (15-7).
Sigourney reached the district championship in dominant fashion, blowing out the Lone Tree Lions 23-2. Hillcrest, on the other hand, had to survive a battle against division rival Highland, plating four runs in the top of the seventh inning to secure the victory.
On the bump, both teams rely on a dominant one-two punch of starting pitchers. For Hillcrest, that duo is Seth Ours and Phoenix Anderson. Ours has thrown two no-hitters this season, while Anderson entered the playoffs with the fourth-best ERA in Class 1A at 0.46. For Sigourney, Chase Clarahan and Lincoln Conrad are their leaders. Clarahan had the best qualified regular-season ERA on the team at 1.65 while Conrad had the most volume at 35.2 innings.
Offensively, Sigourney has been one of the best offenses in the state, leading the class with 18 home runs and ranking top five in terms of doubles, batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and walks. Their most powerful batsman is Clarahan, who was second in the class with 6 regular season home runs, while Lincoln Power’s .659 OBP made him the most consistent hitter in the Savage lineup.
Rowan Miller leads the Hillcrest offense, slashing .347/.455/.472 and leading the team with 24 RBIs. Most of the team’s power, though, comes off the bat of Liam Schrock, who has three of the team’s five home runs this season.
The sides have only met once in the Varsity Bound Era, back in 2017, when the Ravens ended Sigourney’s season in a 10-0 blowout.
The KCII Area Game of the Week Pregame Show will begin at 6:30 p.m. on AM 1380, FM 102.5 and the KCII2 stream. First pitch between the Savages and Ravens is scheduled for 7 live from Sigourney.
