The No. 2 Sigourney Savages (21-3) are set to host the Lone Tree Lions (9-13) in a rematch from last year’s postseason on KCII3 Tuesday night.
The Lions reached the second round in dramatic fashion, staging a seven-run seventh to come from behind and upset Montezuma on Monday. Ace pitcher Jack Patterson led the way on the bump for the Lions, securing a complete-game victory, while eighth grader Travis Ford proved to be the hero offensively, collecting two RBIs, two hits, two stolen bases and a run in the win.
The Lions are set to face one of the most potent offenses in Class 1A in Sigourney. The Savages lead the class in home runs and are top five in runs scored, on base percentage and slugging percentage.
Sigourney’s offense is led by the one-two punch of Lincoln Power, who is fourth in the state in on-base percentage, and Chase Clarahan, who is second in home runs.
Clarahan is also one of the squad’s two best pitchers alongside sophomore Landon Conrad. Clarahan leads the way with a 1.65 ERA, the lowest among Sigourney’s qualified pitchers, while Conrad holds the most volume, throwing 35.2 innings. Freshman Carver Russell has emerged as the team’s number three, throwing a team-low 0.92 WHIP and .136 opponent batting average.
A season ago, Lone Tree gave Sigourney its biggest scare in the substate tournament, coming within two runs of the Savages, but Sigourney ultimately ended the Lions’ season in the second round, 6-4.
The KCII Area Game of the Week Pregame Show will begin at 6:30 p.m. with first pitch set for 7 live from Sigourney.
