
District day is here for the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk baseball team as they travel to Pleasantville to battle Grandview Christian in the Class 2A playoffs. The Golden Hawks are 16-12 on the year and winners of back-to-back games over Washington and Iowa City Regina to close the regular season. This year the Golden Hawks hit .274 as a team with a .398OBP, .352 slug 171 runs, 205 hits, 138RBI, 120 walks and 148 strikeouts. Tatem Telfer and Brooks Weber are both over .300 at .342 and .319 respectively. Telfer has a team best 21RBI, Weber leads with 29 hits and 22 runs scored. On the mound, the Golden Hawk staff ERA is 3.56 with a 1.56WHIP, .249 opponent average, 185 hits, 96 earned runs, 222 strikeouts and 110 walks. Brady and Brooks Weber and Tatem Telfer have combined for a 13-4 record and 2.30ERA.
Grandview Christian is 15-11 this year, they finished 10-5, fourth in the Heart of Iowa Conference. The Thunder advanced with a 7-3 win Monday over Pella Christian. For the year, they hit .284 as a club, with a .409OBP, .392 slug, 168 runs, 187 hits, 117RBI, 133 walks and 183 strikeouts. They have three players at .300 or better, led by Austin Jordan’s .453 with 34 hits and 37 runs scored. Luke Jordan has driven in 24. On the mound, they have a staff ERA of 3.01 with a 1.34WHIP, .173 opponent average, 131 hits, 72 earned runs, 94 walks, and 179 strikeouts. Luke Jordan is 7-0 this season. These two schools have never met. This week, Golden Hawk head coach Kyle Mullet shared the keys to postseason success for his team.
Mullet said, “We’re very pleased with this last week going into the tournament. We averaged 11 hits in the three games we played this week. Offensively, we’re so happy with the way that’s going. Moving forward, we have to play clean defense, keep putting the ball in play and our pitchers need to eliminate walks.”
The winner of tonight’s contest advances to the district 11 championship game on Saturday to face either Pleasantville or Prairie City Monroe.
