There have been 124 traffic fatalities in Iowa so far this year, with 13 of those being in motorcycle crashes according to the Iowa Department of Transportation. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcyclists are about 22 times more likely than passenger vehicle occupants to die in a crash, and four times more likely to get injured.

Whether operating a motorcycle or behind the wheel of a car, drivers are reminded to be aware of their surroundings.

Those on motorcycles are reminded to make themselves visible, maintain a safe distance, use signals, avoid blind spots of other vehicles, and wear protective gear. According to the Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau, wearing a helmet can save your life. In Iowa, an average of 75 percent of people killed in motorcycle crashes were not wearing a helmet.

Helmets are not mandatory in Iowa for all riders.

Motor vehicle drivers are reminded to check blind spots for others, use turn signals, and keep appropriate distances.

All drivers are reminded to drive without distractions and to drive sober.
