The City of Kalona is planning to enter an engineering partnership with Washington County for a construction project on 110th Street.
According to Kalona City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh and Washington County Engineer Jacob Thorius, the project will place an ottaseal, similar to a chipseal, on the road. It is currently gravel. Schlabaugh says the change will help extend the road’s longevity, “That’s a little more sustainable, having to be a farm-to-market road, than just a normal gravel.”
The project itself is still a ways out on the calendar, with Iowa Department of Transportation permitting yet to take place.
According to Schlabaugh, the current negotiations would have Kalona responsible for 5% of the project at approximately $20,000, putting the total project cost at near $400,000. The project extends from the intersection of 110th and Highway One to the East into unincorporated Washington County.
