The Washington School Board has joined a new property and liability insurance pool 28E Agreement.
Washington is now part of the Storm Protection Fund Deductible Pool. It is an alternative to traditional insurance in which school districts across the state join a risk pool that would provide similar coverage to the district’s current insurance at a reduced cost.
Washington Superintendent Willie Stone gave some background on the district’s current insurance coverage, and why he feels this would be a good decision, “This agreement allows us to basically buy insurance for a little bit less for what our hail insurance would be. So it’s a savings for us, we are going to go into this with several districts across the state of Iowa and be a part of this. It spreads the cost out over several districts instead of us bearing the brunt of the cost of hail insurance, which, with everything we have had the past several years as far as the derecho and things like that, it just makes sense for us to do it, and it actually costs us less money.”
The Washington district is looking at a savings of 8-10% on their insurance premium by joining the pool. The exact number of schools joining the pool is not yet known with the deadline not for another month. One nearby district that has also joined is Mid-Prairie.
