Louisa County Conservation partnered with students and staff at Morning Sun Elementary School to restore the prairie behind the school.
Over the course of six months, conservationists, students and teachers collaborated to collect seeds, prepare and burn the quarter-acre prairie, and reseed it. The project gave students in the fifth and sixth grade a chance to learn about ecology and wildlife management.
Burnings, such as the one done by Morning Sun and Louisa County Conservation, help prairie ecosystems by removing invasive species and preserving native ones.
