
After a dominant season on the oval for Mid-Prairie boys and girls track, the two head coaches that orchestrated this spring’s success have been recognized by the River Valley Conference. Golden Hawk girls head track coach Mark Hostetler and boys head track coach Dain Jeppson were named River Valley Conference Coaches of the Year.
The Golden Hawk girls opened the season winning the Iowa Association of Track Coaches Indoor Class 2A State Team Championship at Iowa State University in Ames behind individual state championships in the long jump and 100 from freshman Jeorgia Evans. The Hawks were team runners-up at the RVC indoor championship meet with Evans winning gold in the 55m, 200m and long jump. The Golden Hawks had four events make the blue oval for the Drake Relays including Evans eighth in the 100 and 22nd in long jump, Dessa Poll 16th in discus and the Golden Hawk 4×100 team of Jeorgia and Jovi Evans, Tessa Bombei and Myli Hershberger making the big stage. The Mid-Prairie girls won their fourth River Valley Conference outdoor team championship in the last five years, beating the field at Tipton by 25 points. The Hawks had RVC event titles from Jeorgia Evans in the 200 and long jump, Poll in discus and the 4×200 with Jovi Evans, Hershberger, Hannah Rodgers and Ruby Miller. At the 2A State Qualifier meet at Monticello, the Hawks were again the team champions, for the fifth straight year, scoring 169 points and winning six events including Jeorgia Evans going quad gold in the 100, 200, long jump and joining Bombei, Hershberger and Jovi Evans to win the 4×100. Poll won discus and Harper Pacha won shot put. Mid-Prairie qualified a total of 17 events for state, and finished fifth as a team at Drake Stadium, with 33 points. Golden Hawk medalists included Jeorgia and Jovi Evans in the 100 and 200, Jeorgia Evans in long jump, the 4×100 with the Evans’, Bombei and Hershberger and the 4×800 with Kendal Landstrum, Tessa Brokaw, Brooklyn Stutzman and Rachel Hostetler.
The Golden Hawk boys were sixth in 2A at the indoor IATC State Championships at ISU, with Emmett Swartzentruber in the two-mile, Burke Berry in shot put and Jayden Stafford in the wheelchair 200, all bringing home event state titles. The Golden Hawks were indoor River Valley Conference team champs at the University of Dubuque with Swartzentruber winning the two-mile, Jayse Yoder the 800 and Berry shot put. The Golden Hawk boys sent three events to Drake with Stafford scoring the title in the wheelchair 400 and the third Drake flag of his career, along with Berry going 12th in shot put and the 4×100 team of Nolan Jergens, Kaden Kos, Ryan Henry and Kendrick Kos competing. The Hawks won their first outdoor team River Valley Conference title since 2018, beating second place Anamosa by 49. Mid-Prairie had individual event championships with Stafford in the wheelchair 100, 200, 400 and 800, Swartzentruber in the two-mile, Berry in shot put, the 4×200 of Jergens, Kendrick Kos, Cash Brown and Henry and the distance medley with Kaden Kos, Henry, Brown and Yoder. It was a team title at the 2A qualifier in Monticello for the Hawks, their first since 2022, with 124 points. Mid-Prairie won eight events including Stafford sweeping the 100, 200, 400 and 800 wheelchair races, Swartzentruber winning the mile and two mile, Berry winning shot put and the Golden Hawk 4×100 of Kaden and Kendrick Kos, Jergens and Henry scoring the win. The Golden Hawks sent 15 events to the state meet in Des Moines, finishing in 9th place in Class 2Awith 25 team points. Medal performances included Stafford in the wheelchair 100, 200, 400 and 800s, Henry in the 100m, Swartzentruber in the mile and two mile, Yoder in the 800, Berry in shot put and the sprint medley with Kaden Kos, Henry, Brown and Yoder.
