The long and short of the season opener for the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk and Highland baseball teams is that the game took five days, while at the same time only taking five innings. The Hawks and Huskies first took the diamond Monday night, and only made it an inning, before weather forced a suspension with the game resumed Friday, in a 10-0 Golden Hawk win.

Monday’s action was just one scoreless frame. When things restarted Friday, the Hawks scored twice in the second with Conner Wiles double scoring Jason Heitman and Gentry Bontrager scoring. The Golden Hawks sent 10 to the plate in the third, scoring six times on five total hits. Wiles added three more on another double, Heitman knocked in a pair, and Blake Swart one RBI with runs for Brady and Brooks Weber, Tatem Telfer, Heitman, Bontrager and Wiles. Denver Nelson drove in Brooks Weber on a ground out in the fourth and in-turn, Weber drove in the winning run, Wiles, on a bases loaded walk in the fifth.

Six of the nine in the Mid-Prairie order scored a run and six of the nine had a hit. Pitchers Brooks and Brady Weber combined on a no-hitter, allowing just two walks on the night, with Brooks Weber getting the start and win, going four innings with six strikeouts. At the plate, Wiles was two for two with five RBI and two runs. Heitman and Gentry Bontrager also had two driven in. One of the Golden Hawks of the game, Conner Wiles joined the KCII postgame show to talk about his night at the plate.

Wiles said, “I thought we had a lot more energy tonight against Highland. Against Davenport West we had a lot of strikeouts. Our pitch selection needed to be better and I thought it was tonight. I got up there with two strikes and I thought ‘just sit back there and wait on it, get your pitch, and go!’ That one felt really good, I knew right when I hit it, it felt smooth off the bat, that I was at least getting two!”

For Highland Colten Sypherd worked a scoreless inning, Bryce Hazelett took the loss, giving up eight earned runs on eight hits in two innings and striking out two. At the plate, Logan McFarland and Landon Roling each had a walk. The win moves Mid-Prairie to 2-0 on the year, while Highland is 0-1. The Golden Hawks host Tipton Memorial Day night in a River Valley Conference doubleheader on KCII while Highland entertains Washington on KCII Tuesday.
