Farmers can now sign up for cost share funds to help with installation of nutrient reduction practices. The funds are available for cover crops, no-till or first-time strip-till or nitrification inhibitor users when applying fertilizer in the fall.
Farmers who enroll can receive a cost share rate of $30 per acre for first time users and $20 per acre for previous users for those who plant cover crops. However, if the ground is in the West Fork Crooked Creek or Long Creek watershed areas, it is eligible for $25 per acre. The cost-share is for up to 160 acres and is available on a first come first served basis with first-time users receiving preference until all funds are allocated. People are encouraged to apply before August 1st.
Residents of Washington County who would like to apply can contact the Washington County Soil and Water Conservation District office at 319-653-6654.
