The Washington Demons scored a victory in the high school girls’ soccer playoffs last night by knocking off West Liberty 1-0 in the Class 1A Region 3 quarterfinals at Washington Wellness Park.
The lone score came in the 18th minute, when junior Jocci Carter fielded a cross to the middle of the field and dropped it off to senior Angeline Anderson, who fired a shot from 20 yards out that tucked inside the top crossbar for her team-high ninth goal of the season.
The Demons would get some help from the crossbar down the stretch, as a penalty kick late in the first half banged off the top bar after a Washington handball and a shot by West Liberty in the last 15 minutes also just missed going in.
But, when it was all said and done, the Demons secured a third straight win and a third postseason victory in the last four seasons. Washington also guarantees that it will finish the season with a winning record by improving to 9-7. The Demons will next play this coming Wednesday in the 1A Region 3 semifinals at Davenport Assumption.
Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union very nearly joined them in the semis, but a second-half tally would give Mediapolis a 1-0 win. The Wildcats end the season with a mark of 5-7 and will now say goodbye to seniors Frannie Sosa and Samarah Garza.
