The high school soccer postseason begins today across the state, and local boys’ teams are hoping to survive and advance to next week’s action in their substate brackets.
That includes the Highland Huskies, who host Grandview Christian in Class 1A Substate 6. Highland has a record of 7-5-2 and has already recorded as many wins this year as in the previous three seasons combined.
Senior Jared Diaz leads the Huskies with 16 goals scored and seven assists this spring, while sophomore Jose Ramirez has been a breakout star for Highland with 10 goals and three assists.
Senior goalkeeper Ayden Havel keeps the opponents off the scoreboard, making 159 saves so far this season and stopping nearly 88 percent of the shots he’s faced. The Huskies will be taking on a Grandview Christian team that is 2-8-2.
The WACO Warriors will have to hit the road for their Class 1A Substate 5 playoff match with Danville. WACO is 4-9 and leans on junior Tristan Luitjens, who leads the team with eight goals and six assists.
Senior Keiran Luitjens adds six goals and five assists for the Warriors, while juniors Nick West and Niles Reichenbach have also each scored at least five times. WACO is facing a Danville team with a similar record of 4-7-1, but the Bears got the better of the Warriors by a slim 1-0 margin when the two teams met on April 14th.
Sigourney-Keota opens up the postseason in 1A Substate 5 by traveling to face Central Lee. SK has a record of 1-12, with Aydin Flowers leading the team by scoring six goals and fellow junior Ty Goldman making over 170 saves in goal.
Sigourney-Keota will be meeting a Central Lee squad that is 11-4. All postseason soccer matches kick off this evening at 7.
