Boys state tournament golf bids are on the line Monday at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Wapello at the Class 1A boys district meet, featuring three teams and one individual from the KCII listening area.

The Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves and Keota Eagles are both looking to make it back-to-back team trips to state after strong 2024s, that saw them each clinch state group bids on this same course a year ago, with the Wolves edging out the Eagles for the title by a single shot last season. Both opened this year’s playoffs impressively, with team titles at sectionals last week. The Wolves were team champs at their home sectional at Twin Lakes Wednesday with a score of 336, to beat Wapello by 14. The top four rounds of the day belonged to the Wolves, with Justin Knipfer winning medalist honors at 78 and Konner Kinneberg, Cody Milks and Nicholas Sparrow shooting matching 86s, followed by Max Edwards 87 and Grant Anderson 92.

At BGM, Keota won the team championship with a 319, beating second place BGM on their home course by four, thanks to a medalist runner-up round from Brennan McGuire at 73, followed by Billie Kindred at 76, Porter Cave 84, Tucker Sprouse 86, Jake Morris 94 and Cooper Strand 97.

WMU enters today with a 39-9 overall record. They are ranked No. 4 in Class 1A according to the latest poll from the Iowa High School Golf Coaches Association. The Wolves full lineup appears in the individual poll including Knipfer 18th, Milks 27th, Kinneberg 30th, Sparrow 54th, Sinjin Brown 57th, Grant Anderson 68th and Edwards 72nd. The Wolves have a team season average of 166 on nine and 338 on 18, led by Knipfer and Kinneberg at 41 on nine and Knipfer at 82 on 18.

Keota is 34-10 this season. The Eagles are ranked No. 5 in Class 1A in the latest poll, with their entire lineup also ranked individually, led by McGuire No. 7, Kindred 14th, Cave 22nd, Sprouse 129th, Strand 142nd and Morris 158th. The Eagles have a team average 170 on nine and 331 on 18, led individually by McGuire and Kindred at 40 each on nine and McGuire’s 75 on 18. The Eagles and Wolves finished with matching 334 scores at state a season ago.

Hillcrest Academy will also be in Wapello today. The Ravens qualified as a team with their third place finish at BGM Wednesday shooting a 330, led by Liam Schrock third with a 73, followed by Rowan Miller’s 74, 89 for Matthew Chalupa, 94 each for Lawson Schrock and Rylan Good and 97 for Ethan Yoder. Hillcrest has a 26-6 record this year with a 169 team average per nine and 330 average on 18, led individually by Liam Schrock’s 37 on nine and 73 on 18. The Ravens were undefeated state champions in 2023.

The Lone Tree Lions will be represented by individual Jack Patterson, who got through the Calamus-Wheatland sectional with an 88. This year Patterson has a 48 average on nine and 88 average on 18. These local teams will be joined by teams and individuals from BGM, Calamus-Wheatland, Central City, Danville, Don Bosco, No. 12 East Buchanan, Easton Valley, English Valleys, No. 16 HLV, Holy Trinity, Bellevue Marquette Catholic, No. 27 Midland, North Linn, and the home Indians. There are 29 ranked golfers in today’s field. Action starts at 10a.m. And continues all day Monday at Heritage Oaks.
