The Washington Demons defeated the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks 5-1 in girls’ soccer Thursday night at Washington Wellness Park. Mid-Prairie got a first-half goal from senior Zoey Curtiss to take the match to halftime tied.
But after sophomore goalkeeper Lily Flynn exited the game having already made nine saves for the Golden Hawks, the Demons took advantage, scoring four goals in the second half to earn the victory.
Nelly Cuevas would score twice for Washington, while fellow junior Luna Cuevas and seniors Maya Murphy and Angeline Anderson also found the back of net. Anderson assisted two of the Demons’ goals, while Murphy and Luna Cuevas each collected an assist.
Junior keeper Aleigha Medley made five saves for Washington as they improve to 8-7. Meanwhile, Mid-Prairie finishes the regular season with a record of 4-9-3.
The Washington boys would not have the same good fortune Friday, falling to Clear Creek Amana 5-0. The Demons trailed 3-0 at the half and could never recover as they end the regular season with a record of 2-13.
Washington will try to turn things around in the postseason when they travel to face Clarke tomorrow in the first round in Class 2A Substate 6. The Demon girls also start the playoffs Wednesday night by taking on West Liberty in the Class 1A Region 3 quarterfinals, while Mid-Prairie will face Wapello later tonight in the first round in Region 3.
