Greyson Hartman is heading to this year’s track and field state championships after winning both throwing events for the Washington Demons at yesterday’s Class 3A state qualifying meet in Mount Vernon.

The junior broke the school record in the discus throw with a winning toss of 173 feet one inch, and Hartman would also be victorious in the shot put with a top throw of 55 feet four-and-a-half inches. It’s a second straight trip to state in the shot for Hartman.

Washington will also be represented at state by their 4-by-800-meter relay team, as the quartet of seniors Tyler Alderton and Logan McDole and juniors Sawyer Tschantz and Carson Ryan finished in second place with a time of eight minutes 10 seconds.

Alderton will also be a contender for an at-large bid to state after a third-place finish at districts in the 800-meter run, as will the Demons’ distance medley relay.

The Washington girls also secured four automatic berths at state. Leighton Messinger was second in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.91 seconds, while fellow junior Iris Dahl was the runner-up in the open 1,500 meters in a tick under five minutes.

Messinger helped the Demons finish second in the shuttle hurdles with a time of 1:08, running with senior Kendall Hinrichsen, junior Leighton Salazar and sophomore Layla Green, while sophomore Jaedyn Moore joined Messinger, Salazar and Green to win another silver medal for Washington in the 4-by-100-meters in 49.32 seconds.

The Demons’ 4-by-200 and 4-by-400 relays are squarely on the bubble for at-large bids after taking third at Mount Vernon. The full list of state qualifiers will be finalized later today.
