The Washington Demons earned another team victory in girls’ track and field Thursday at the Ekstrand Relays in Wayland. Washington’s final team score of 133 points was 16 better than second-place Fort Madison to win the Class A division and was the best across both groups at Roth Track and Field.
Jaedyn Moore was a big part of the Demons’ success by getting two individual victories. The sophomore was the Class A champion in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.72 seconds, and she also won the 200 meters in 26.31. Freshman Jaslyn Villa was also a champion in the long jump by leaping 14 feet 10 inches.
Leighton Messinger brought home gold for Washington in the 400-meter hurdles by crossing the finish line in just under one minute nine seconds, and the junior ran a leg on the Demons’ winning shuttle hurdles relay that had that same time, joining senior Kendall Hinrichsen, junior Leighton Salazar and sophomore Layla Green.
Messinger would also finish second in the 100 hurdles, as would senior Lauren Horak in the open 400 and Washington’s 4-by-400-meter relay and their sprint medley. Green was third in the high jump, as was fellow sophomore Emma Horak in the 1,500 meters and the Demons’ distance medley.
The Washington boys took fourth as a team in Class A. Kael Williams led the way as the 100-meter champion by clocking in at 11.36 seconds, and the junior was also part of the Demons’ 4-by-100 relay along with seniors Keider Gomez Valdez, Jayfred Espinosa and Nate Edmonds that had the winning time of 44.57 seconds.
Sophomore Greyson Hartman won another gold for Washington in the shot put with a top toss of 58 feet 11-and-a-half inches, while senior Tyler Alderton took silver in the 3,200 meters, as did the Demons’ 4-by-800 relay. Alderton was also third in the 1,600, as was Espinosa in the long jump and the distance medley.
