Both Washington Demon soccer teams suffered losses to Fairfield last night. The Washington boys fell behind to Fairfield by allowing a goal in the 15th minute at Washington Wellness Park. But junior Edwin Cortes tied the match one minute later by scoring off a rebound of a saved shot by freshman Johan Recendez.

Cortes would do it again by finishing off a loose ball after senior Kevin Marcelino had a shot saved in the 31st minute. Cortes’ second goal not only took the Demons into halftime with the lead, but it looked like it would be enough to give them the win.

Instead, Fairfield would level things with less than 10 minutes to go and would manage to score what proved to be the winning goal with just under two minutes to play in a 3-2 final. The defeat drops Washington to 1-2 in the Southeast Conference and 1-5 overall.

The Demon girls would also fall at Fairfield, allowing the game’s only goal in the first half and never managing to make up that 1-0 margin. With a loss, Washington falls to 0-2 in conference play and 3-3 in total. Both Demon teams next take on Fort Madison on Monday.
