Winfield-Mount Union is getting a new boys’ track and field season started, and while the Wolves have plenty of senior talent to replace from last year’s team like hurdles state medalist Gabe Hemsworth and former long jump state champion Cam Buffington, much of the WMU roster from 2024 returns.

That includes senior Kohlby Newsom, one of the top distance runners in Class 1A who helped Winfield-Mount Union win state medals in the 4-by-400-meter and distance medley relays and reached state in the open 800 meters.

Sheaden Adams was part of those relay teams as well and is back for the Wolves in his senior season, while junior Jaxton Jones is also back after winning a Southeast Iowa Super Conference championship with the distance medley team.

WMU head coach Matt Sheyko tells KCII Sports that his team might have lots of new faces on paper, but they have plenty of talent in their ranks.

“Last year, we had this gigantic senior class that moved out,” Sheyko says, “and heading into this year, it’s funny, we have just about as strong a team this year, and those seniors that are coming back, I’m really excited to see how they perform.”

Winfield-Mount Union will compete for the first time this track season this coming Monday at the Columbus Invitational at Louisa-Muscatine.
