It’s an all-area girls battle with a regional semifinal berth on the line tonight in Sigourney, as the home Savages try to stave off WACO in a game you can hear on KCII.
Sigourney is 17-5 overall and are SICL East champions at 11-3. Their last game came last week in a 60-52 loss to Centerville. Josephine Moore led the way with a monster double-double of 15 points and 18 rebounds. This season, Sigourney scores 58 per game and gives up 42, shooting 35% from the field, 26% from three and 63% at the line, with 34 boards, 12 assists, 15 steals, two blocks and 16 turnovers per game. Individually, Moore leads the way in the SICL East with nearly 19 a game, and is the top rebounder in the division with 11 a contest.
The WACO girls started regional action last week, advancing to take on Sigourney via a 45-30 victory at home over Burlington Notre Dame. That win was WACO’s 15th of the season. Brenna Graber earned Washington County Hospital and Clinics Player of the Game honors with a game-high 16 points. This year, the Warriors score 46 per game and give up 43, shooting 32% from the field, 25% from three and 47% at the stripe, with 35 rebounds, nine assists, 10 steals, two blocks and 17 turnovers a night. Individually, Graber leads the team with 14 per game.
Sigourney Head Coach Kaylee Weber previewed her team’s second matchup of the season with WACO on Saturday’s edition of the KCII Radio Coaches Corner. “I felt like we moved the ball very well. We made our shots when we needed to, we turned them [WACO] over a lot (in the first matchup). Our press looked really nice. I’m kind of expecting some things out of them, so we’ll see what happens. Hopefully we have an even better outcome than what we had the last time we played them,” Weber said.
WACO Head Coach Lisa Graber also stopped by the Coaches Corner to talk about the things her team needs to do better in their second matchup with the Savages if they want to pull off the upset on the road. “We have to have a great defensive awareness because they [Sigourney] have multiple threats. They have a great point guard and great post play. Just continue to really focus on our man defense and not having possessions that are letdowns, and then taking care of the ball. Making good decisions when we’re on offense and not having unforced turnovers,” Graber said.
In the Varsity Bound era, the Savages lead the series with WACO 6-2 dating back to 2017, including a 64-42 win in Wayland in January.
