U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley recently voiced his concern about the firing of Inspectors General across multiple Federal Agencies. KCII spoke with the Senator on Monday about what this means for government oversight, “Because of my constitutional responsibility to oversight, which means that every member of congress and I think I do it as aggressively or more aggressively than any other member of congress. We do oversight, we not only pass laws and appropriate money, we got the responsibility to see that the executive branch of government faithfully executes the laws. Now that’s my job here as a congressman, but in the last fifty-five years that we’ve had IG’s in each agency of the government, I work closely with IG’s they are supposed to be doing within the executive branch, what we do as congressmen, ferret out not enforcing the law the fraudulent expenditure of money. You could name a dozen different things that they are supposed to be keeping watch on. So when I find out that something is wrong within a department, sometimes I will ask the inspector generals to work with me, and I get their cooperation and I defend them. So this letter to President Trump was one way of defending IG’s. They’re supposed to be separate from politics, they are supposed to be appointed, to be very independent within their agency to make sure laws are enforced and money is spent properly.” Grassley sent a letter to President Trump highlighting that Congress was not provided the legally required 30-day notice and case-specific reasons for removal. He also voiced concerns to the president over X, formerly Twitter. The Senator stated that his office has yet to receive a reply, as of Monday afternoon.
