Andrew Rees finished off an excellent season with Washington Demon cross country by achieving one of the highest honors in the state. The junior won a medal at this year’ Class 3A state championships Saturday at Kennedy Park in Fort Dodge.
Rees finished 13th in the boys’ race with a time of 16 minutes 20.8 seconds, helping lead Washington to a seventh-place finish as a team. Senior Tyler Alderton also ran a top-30 time of 16 minutes 43 seconds, while junior Sawyer Tschatnz just missed the top 40 by crossing the finish line in 16:59.
The Washington girls also competed at the state meet and were paced by Iris Dahl. While the junior did not win a state medal for a third straight year, she still finished inside the top 35 in Class 3A by clocking in at just under 19:42.
Seniors Kendall Hnirichsen and Lauren Horak also had times in the top half of the field as the Demons made their second appearance at state in the last three years.
The Washington boys competing at state for a second straight year marked the first time in school history that both cross country teams competed at state in the same season.
