We continue our look back at some of the top sports stories of the 2010s decade and today we see what happened in the year 2014 at Washington High School.
The Washington girls’ golf team returned to the state tournament in 2014 in what would start a string of dominant years for the Orange and Black. The Demons finished seventh in class 4A including Megan Buitendorp placing ninth with a 36-hole score of 181.
At the state track and field meet in Des Moines junior Tommy Peterson did some damage in the class 3A shot put placing third with a heave of 53’4.75’’.
The Demon wrestling squad had three competitors stand on the podium at Wells Fargo Arena. Brad Skubal took home seventh place at 182 lbs for class 2A, Kyle Anderson eighth at 113 lbs, and Fletcher Green eighth at 120 lbs.
After making the state championship game the year prior, the Demon football team had another strong year finishing 8-4 and qualifying for a class 3A state quarterfinal. Washington averaged 35 points a game and quarterback Daryn Sebelius racked up nearly 3,000 yards of total offense and was responsible for 33 touchdowns.
