waco-warriors-300x239-10

The first boys basketball team in Iowa to support a 19-0 record resides in Wayland, as WACO stayed unbeaten on Thursday with a 60-48 home win over Burlington Notre Dame.

It was a one-possession win in their first meeting last month, but there was no sweating it out this time with the Warriors exploding for a 19-7 lead at the end of one and 37-19 advantage at the break. The Nikes tried to make a second half surge, but could never get over the hump and the Warriors managed a season sweep. Gabe Reichenbach paced three players in double figures with 19, Nik Coble had 17, and Pietro Vannini recorded 10. The Southeast Iowa Super Conference South division champs look for their 20th win tonight when they host the North division champs Pekin for the conference shootout.

The WACO girls trailed by just nine at half, but being outscored 15-1 in the third put the game out of reach and they fell to the Nikes 45-23. Morgan Graber tallied seven points and Maysan Lee had six. The Warriors close the regular season 5-16 and they get right back on the court with the Nikes on Thursday in a first round class 1A regional game.
