The Washington boys’ basketball team played a thriller of a game at home last night, losing to archrival Mount Pleasant by a 50-46 score.
The Demons got out to a hot start, taking an 8-2 lead before the Panthers went on a 6-0 run to end the first in a tie. Washington would come out swinging in the second quarter and take a 21-17 lead into the halftime break. The Demons entered the fourth quarter down by five, and were down by as many as seven, but stormed back to retake the lead. Then the Panthers took it back, the Demons took it back, lather, rinse, repeat, until the game was finally tied up at the end of regulation.
It was a 43-43 ballgame entering OT. Foul trouble had been plaguing both teams down the stretch, as each team lost their starting point guards and one other pivotal player at some point in the fourth quarter to fouling out. Each team also had one player out there with four fouls for most or all of the overtime period, and both teams were in the double bonus going in. Despite that, fouls weren’t a huge factor until the very end, as the Panthers grabbed a lead and kept it through free throws after intentional Demon fouls. Mount Pleasant would outscore Washington 7-3 in the four minutes of overtime to secure the win.
The Demons were lead offensively by Trevor Quigley with 12 points, three of which came on a clutch deep ball to tie it up late in the fourth quarter. Treshaun Willis wasn’t far behind with 11, and Cade Hennigan finished with nine.
Their next action will be this coming Thursday when they head to Keota for a KCII-area match-up. That game will be live on AM 1380, FM 102.5 and KCIIradio.com with the Washington HyVee Pregame Show starting at 7:00.
