Residents in the Winfield-Mt. Union School District are being asked to vote for an extension of the Physical Plant Equipment Levy, or PPEL.
The district is currently in a 10-year levy that charges $1.34 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, in addition to $.33 that is certified annually by the school board. This special election will determine whether to continue the 10-year levy from 2020-2030, and would not be an increase to what is currently taxed to residents. Superintendent Jeff Maeder shares what PPEL could provide, “Probably the most pressing thing that we have right now is our HVAC system needing to be updated. We have boilers that are well past their life expectancy, so that is probably the number one thing that people could count on this revenue being used.”
PPEL may be used for purposes including the purchase and improvement of grounds, construction of buildings, purchase of equipment or technology exceeding $500, and purchase of transportation equipment. A portion of the levy revenue has paid for an athletic complex, including a new track, football field, bleachers, and concession stand. A simple majority is needed to pass the levy. Residents can vote from noon-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Winfield City Office, or vote absentee at the Henry County Courthouse.
