Mid-Prairie led for more than three quarters of their Senior Night game Friday in Wellman against the Mediapolis Bulldogs, but costly Golden Hawk miscues and a late MEPO surge gave them the win 39-28.
In a game heard on KCII, Mid-Prairie started the night with fireworks, scoring touchdowns on their first two possessions. Justin Schwartz hauled in a four yard scoring pass from Karson Gingerich to cap a five play 83 yard drive while Keaton Duwa finished a six play 65 yard march with a seven yard touchdown run to put Mid-Prairie up 14-0. Mediapolis answered with Zach Osborne returning the ensuing kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown. Following the missed extra point and a Golden Hawk interception, Brennan Swafford found pay dirt from seven yards out to pull the Bulldogs within 14-13.
Backed up at their own two on third down, Karson Gingerich found Terrhyn Jacoby who raced 98 yards for the longest touchdown in Mid-Prairie history to put the Hawks back on top 21-13. With Mid-Prairie looking to increase the lead before the break, Gingerich was stripped of the ball as he dropped back to pass at the Golden Hawk 25 and Swafford swooped in, scooped it and took it to the house to make the score 21-20 Mid-Prairie at the half. The Golden Hawks were guilty of four turnovers in the game.
In the second half, Mid-Prairie again assumed control, after forcing a Mediapolis three and out the Hawks went 81 yards on eight plays with Jacoby pulling in his second touchdown reception of the night, this one from 16 yards out to put the Hawks back up 28-20. From there, Mediapolis put together 19 unanswered points as Swafford scored his third touchdown of the night to get the Bulldogs within two. MEPO took their first lead of the contest in the fourth quarter on a Cauy Massner one yard scoring run and got another insurance touchdown from Swafford in the games final four minutes to put it out of reach.
Mid-Prairie outgained Mediapolis 470-306 including 219 to 94 through the air and 251 to 212 on the ground. The Golden Hawks were guilty of four turnovers on the night. Mid-Prairie was led by Keaton Duwa with 29 carries for 229 yards and a touchdown. Karson Gingerich finished nine of 19 for 182 and three touchdowns. Terrhyn Jacoby ended with three catches for 151 yards and a pair of scores. Brennan Swafford led the Bulldogs with 34 carries for 175 yards and four total touchdowns. Mid-Prairie says good bye to 11 seniors Terrhyn Jacoby, Karson Gingerich, Keaton Duwa, Jacob Tappan, Ryan Slaubaugh, Jason Tew, Josh Slaubaugh, Jacob Busch, Cameron Martinez, Scott Winborn and Paul Wittke.With the loss, the Golden Hawks wrap up the season at 3-6.
