Runs were at a premium in a Friday Southeast Superconference baseball showdown between rivals Iowa Mennonite School and Lone Tree.
he Lions got the win 2-1. With Sam Fuhrmeister on the hill for the Lions and Blake Bontrager for IMS, neither team was able to get on track offensively. In a game heard on KCII, Lone Tree got on the board in the second when Michael Schmidt crushed a solo homer on a 1-1 pitch to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. They would double that lead to 2-0 in the third when Jovonte Squiers walked and then stole his way around the bases, ending with a steal of home that saw him dive past the IMS catcher Isaiah Swantz, missing the plate, but dive back to get in safely. IMS had chances throughout the night but could not break through for a big inning. In the fourth, after back to back singles to lead off the inning, Squiers stabbed a line drive at short, touched second and threw to first for a triple play to end the threat. IMS would get on the board in the fifth when Drake Brezina doubled off the center field wall to drive in Swantz. Fuhrmeister went the distance in the win for Lone Tree, seven innings, six hits, one run and stirking out four. Bontrager took the tough luck loss for IMS going six, giving up one hit, a pair of runs and striking out four. IMS is now 7-5 on the year, Lone Tree improves to 9-6.
