The Washington Demon softball team took a pair of Southeast Conference contests from Fort Madison Thursday night at the Washington Softball Complex by 7-4 and 5-1 scores.
As heard on KCII, the Demons started hot in game one, scoring three runs on three hits in the first with Jessie Buchholz, Morgan Brinning and Hannah Anderson all coming around. The Demons added single runs in the second and fourth innings on RBI hits from Megan Mitchell and Brinning respectively to run the lead to 5-0. Fort Madison answered back with a big four run fifth, including a three run homer from left fielder Kamryn Bailey to make it 5-4. Washington responded in the sixth, plating a pair with Buchholz and Brinning scoring again. Leading 7-4, Demon hurler Molly Sparks recorded the final three outs to seal the win. In game one Washington was led by Megan Mitchell who was 4/4 with an RBI, Brinning was 2/2 with two runs scored and a pair driven in. Sparks got the win going all seven, walking one and striking out four.
Game two was a slower start for both teams offensively with things at a scoreless tie through the first three innings. It was the Demons who broke through in the fourth, scoring three times in the frame with Halle Leyden, Brooke Stout and Hannah Anderson all scoring. The top of the fifth saw the Bloohounds answer with a run of their own to get within 3-1. Washington added two more in the fifth to go up 5-1 and it was more than enough for starter Alexa Mitchell who was brilliant in the circle throwing a complete game seven hitter in the win, allowing just one unearned run. After the game, Demon head coach Ben Obermann talked about the night.
