The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girls golf team opens the 2017 season tonight when they travel to the Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Iowa City to take on the Regina Regals.
Last year, Mid-Prairie finished with a 24-32 overall record, seventh in the River Valley Conference. The Golden Hawks advanced through the first round of regional play but were eliminated in the regional finals at West Liberty, shooting a 452. The Golden Hawks lost leading scorer senior Allyson Wertz to graduation. Wertz, an all-stater, led the Golden Hawks and was seventh in the state a year ago with a 44 average per nine holes.
Mid-Prairie has seen the numbers in the program rise from seven a year ago to 14 this season. Second leading scorer from last year junior Paige Slabaugh returns. She shot 55 per nine holes a season ago. Others who are back with varsity experience include Olivia Nisly, Lindsey Palmer, Mikenzie Bontrager, Abby Statler, and Brianna Kofron.
Action begins this afternoon at 3PM and continues into the evening at Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Iowa City.
