The Washington bowling teams will be under the direction of a new head coach next season. Sally Reighard, who helped start the high school bowling program in Washington, announced her retirement at Tuesday’s end of the year bowling banquet at Washington Middle School.
Reighard told KCII Sports she started coaching youth league bowling in Washington in 1983. Reighard started the Washington high school bowling program as a club sport during the 2000-01 school year. The Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union sanctioned the sport during the 2006-07 school year and the Iowa High School Athletic Association followed during the 2009-10 season with a boys program.
Reighard led the Demon girls’ bowling team to the Class 1A state tournament in 2007 and 2008, placing eighth both times. The 2007 squad consisted of Breann Barnett, Meridith Cavin, Danielle Christensen, Rachel Eckwell, Ashley Farrington and Madison Stalder. The 2008 team was made up of Barnett, Dannielle Christensen, Shannon Christensen,Farrington, Allison Flake and Ariel Williams.Five individual bowlers have qualified for the state tournament during Reighard’s tenure. They include: Anthony Brock (2007 & 2008),Tad Martin (2009), Wesley Parriott (2011), Makenzie Martin (2012) and Jessica Londberg (2014).
Reighard has coached multiple Southeast Conference championship bowlers since becoming a sanctioned sport. Shannon Christiansenwon gold in 2010 and 2011. A.J. Flake was the boys individual conference champion in 2010 and Colin Zear took first place in this year’s league tournament.
Reighard currently serves as a director on the Iowa State USBC Women’s Bowling Association Board. Her term is set to end on August 1, 2018.
